It’s human nature to close off things and start things anew. For example, we close off 2014 and start 2015. We close off first quarter and start second quarter. We close our Rogers account only to open a Bell account. We close our cottages in October only to open them back up in May…if we’re lucky and the weather works with us. What I do find curious is that we very often hesitate to close things for good. We drag our feet sometimes, perhaps feeling that we can’t ‘pull the chute” so to speak, and amazingly on some pretty important issues. I think it may be because we don’t have a “go to” or something to “open up” in place. It’s hard to walk away from things if they didn’t work or they are not good for you, but really need to go. I’m thinking about this more often these days as I hear more and more about “New Year’s Resolutions”. Quitting smoking, quitting overeating, quitting sedentary habits…all of these things are “walk aways” and all are really hard to do. They are, however, doable and are very rewarding.
I draw similarity to our industry. We have to walk away from status quo. We have to walk away from “because this is how we’ve always done it”. We have to close off from old ways of doing things when it comes to driver training, safety and compliance and hiring. We need to open up to new ways of hiring by using behavioural data and predictive modelling. We need to train our drivers the way they respond to training. We need to open ourselves up to technology when it comes to safety and compliance using things such as telematics and programs that track and trend our driving habits.
We have a great opportunity to partner with the transportation insurance industry by implementing telematics that will flow right into their UBI(User Based Insurance) platforms. Trucking has always been progressive in risk management by using GPS technology and geo fencing and the like. It’s exciting to finally see our insurers embrace technology and totally buy into its value in rating and assessing trucking risks.
I think we will all be opening our eyes to some very new and exciting trends in our industry, as well as walking away from some old habits and I for one can’t wait to be a part of it all in 2015!
