Lisa Arseneau – Vice President - Lisa began her career in the transportation industry in 1986, joining Central Ontario Appraisers Inc. Her responsibilities included the day to day operation from scheduling appraisals to handling total loss negotiations. She was involved with many industry professionals including adjusters, claims examiners, insurers and insureds. Lisa had 5 years behind her when she made the transition to the Insurance Company side of the industry. Markel Insurance Company of Canada (Northbridge Insurance) is one of Canada’s largest transportation insurers. While there, Lisa developed an extensive network of industry related contacts that are still a very important part of her business life today. Her duties included underwriting, claims and information technology which allowed her to obtain knowledge of just about every aspect of the transportation industry. In 1997 Lisa decided it was time to attack the industry from yet another angle and became an insurance broker. Lisa was hired by a large Ontario brokerage and was put in charge of creating a new Transportation Department. During the next two years, she was able to connect more directly with the transportation companies and continued to develop and maintain her industry contacts. Since then she has worked as an insurance broker solely in the trucking and transportation segment. Currently in her nineteenth year as a Broker, with H L Staebler Insurance Brokers, she is as passionate today as she was the first day she started. Lisa belongs to several trucking industry associations and is active in all of them, staying current on industry trends, etc. She specializes in safety & compliance areas such as mock audits, company structuring and analysis and is very instrumental in bringing the industry to her clients.

September 11th…such an important date in our recent history. I find myself reflecting on the horrific events of that day. The sorrow, loss and terror we all felt that day, and even now, and the sense of helplessness are deeply ingrained in all of us. Our industry is so intertwined with the U.S. We are constantly watching them for trends, laws and changes in them such as Hours of Service, weights and measures, etc. We sometimes travel more in their country than in our own. In a sense, we feel very tied to them in many ways, so it is very natural for many of us to feel their loss so deeply. Let us never forget and stand strong with our American neighbours.
I write about attending industry events, seminars and conferences often, and maybe, quite frankly, be repetitive about them. However,

I really feel that the importance of these events can’t be stressed enough. For example, in just the next three months the industry is having The Toronto Transportation Club’s Night at the Races, The OTA golf Tournament. Also the Muskoka Golf Tournament hosted by the TTC, the OTA Big Wheels Bike and Car Rally, The Surface Transportation Summit, and The OTA Annual Convention. The Hamilton Transportation Club is hosting a luncheon featuring Mike McCarron which I am looking very forward to as well! All of these are fantastic opportunities for anyone wanting to network, meet and talk Trucking! I hope you attend some or all of these events and I hope I get to meet you!
For me, throw in some of my insurance industry events such as our Annual Broker Convention, Insurer Conferences and one or two more golf tournaments and the exposure is doubled! Because of the locations of these events and the different organizations that hold them, there are always different people attending. One might think that you would see the same faces at all the events, and I’m here to tell you that just doesn’t happen! It is really rewarding to make the time to attend these functions. I have recently begun to take some “newer” industry folks to some of these events and they come away wide eyed and appreciative to have met and listened to so many great individuals in their own industry. Until you expose yourself to what’s going on out there, you don’t know what you don’t know!
Have a safe Autumn Season and I hope you check back soon and often!
