It’s almost the end of October, another month gone and another month closer to the end of the year. I enjoy this time of the year for many reasons. Fall is my favorite season with all the leaves changing colors and big, warm sweaters to be worn! It’s also a great time to reflect and plan, both at the same time. It is especially my favorite time of year, this year, as I was able to take my Father to Ireland this past week. My brother and I got together to celebrate our Dad’s 80th birthday and take him to his matriarchal homeland.
If you ever want to experience centuries of history, Ireland is the place to go. It really has a way of setting one’s perspective regarding one’s place in the world. Apart from the history, the people are truly amazing and fiercely proud of their country and heritage. We met so many that were willing to share so many stories of how their country was formed and how they live in it today.
I also got to experience driving on the other side of the road, their roadways and not the least terrifying, their roundabouts! We travelled 1,625 kilometers while circling the country. As a transportation person, I was thoroughly enthralled with their well maintained highways and their absolute bravery in negotiating their small and winding rural roads. We followed a tractor trailer on a 13 kilometer Regional Road that had me white knuckling it at times. He maneuvered his rig with skill and precision that was not only amazing but inspiring. I was grateful to be behind him many times. Especially the times when on coming vehicles were not always trusted to be as good at driving as he was. We were very disappointed when he turned off and went the other way and left us to negotiate the rest of the roads without his guidance. Cabovers have always been my favorite type of tractor (visually), ever since I entered the transportation industry over thirty years ago. Seeing bright shiny new ones was a real kick for me.
Now that we are home, it’s time to focus on tidying up the year and finishing off the things I set out to do last year at around this time. Thankfully, there are only a few stragglers on my list and a bunch of new things that I want to accomplish this coming year. Onward and upwards, as they say!
