The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) is looking to continue building on the groundwork established in 2018 to evolve truck safety enforcement toward levelling the playing field for compliant carriers. To begin, OTA called a meeting this month of the insurance industry to discuss two significant issues – writable ELD enforcement and the review of facility insurance. The meeting was led by OTA president Stephen Laskowski, David Carruth, Chairman, and OTA Vice-Chair Wendell Erb.

“The group was very engaged and had positive discussions on ways the trucking and insurance industry could cooperate on improving enforcement of writable ELD devices pre- and post- federal regulation. Equally interesting was the discussions on exploring potential policy changes dealing with facility insurance and how it is currently utilized in the marketplace,” said OTA Vice Chair Wendell Erb.

This was the first in a series of meetings this year between the insurance sector and OTA to try and improve truck safety performance while addressing level playing-field issues.

Last week OTA and its two chairs met with Ontario Transportation Minister Jeff Yurek, to brief him on OTA’s truck safety vision and how the Government of Ontario can reduce red tape in the trucking sector.

“Minister Yurek was engaged in our issues and we look forward to working with him in helping make Ontario’s roads safer while also reducing red tape in our sector for the majority of compliant carriers,” said OTA Chair David Carruth.
