The Private Motor Truck Council of Canada and Trucking Human Resources Sector Council Atlantic have announced details of their annual Eastern region educational seminar.

The seminar will be held on September 18th at the beautiful Fox Harbour Resort in Wallace Nova Scotia. The Educational Seminar will run from 8:45am to 12pm, with registration beginning at 8:15.  This will be the 5th year in a row the two organizations have joined forces to provide attendees with exceptional educational value to take back to their workplaces.  This year’s event will center around youth recruitment, retention and engagement in the Transportation industry, Atlantic Immigration Pilot Project and will also provide a brief update on the Federal Electronic Logging Device Regulations. This seminar will bring value to employees and employers from many different sectors of the industry.

The Topics covered include:

Federal Electronic Logging Device Update: Mike Millian, the President of the PMTC, will provide attendees with a brief update on the ELD mandate. The Canadian ELD Regulation was posted in Canada Gazette part 2 on June 12th of 2019. What does the rule mean to you, when will the regulations take effect and for who? Mike will answer these questions as part of his presentation.

Youth Initiatives and Engagement: Matt Richardson, Sales & Operations Manager of KRTS, and the Chair of the PMTC’s Young Leaders Group, will discuss what the group has been working on to promote the industry to the youth who are currently outside of it. Matt will go into specifics on the YLG and their membership, the initiatives they are working on, which are focused on attracting more young people to our industry. Matt will also discuss the success and future of the ‘Driven to Lead’ leadership certificate program that the first class just graduated from in May of 2019.

Smart Start Program & how it helps recruit & support new drivers to the Industry: Leanne Quail, operations manager at Paul Quail Transport, will discuss her creative and innovative approach to combating the driver shortage through her program called Smart Start. This is a joint venture with the provincial/federal government that has seen many successful candidates obtain funding to obtain their AZ licence and move into careers as professional drivers for Paul Quail Transport. Over the last year Leanne has spoken at several industry associations and events on the success of Smart Start. She was named the first ever National Recruiter of the year at the National Recruiting and Retention Symposium in April of 2019, and the success of this program was instrumental in helping her achieve this great honour.

Panel of Youth in the Industry: Matt and Leanne will come together to be part of a moderated panel where they will discuss the support they have received, and need, and their experiences as being young leaders in this industry. This is also your opportunity to ask them questions and gain further from their perspectives and experiences as an up and coming leader.

Office of Immigration:  Attend to hear recent additions to programs, clarifications on Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program and have a chance to clarify any questions you might have around the programs.  Build your recruiting opportunities!
