Lisa Arseneau – Vice President - Lisa began her career in the transportation industry in 1986, joining Central Ontario Appraisers Inc. Her responsibilities included the day to day operation from scheduling appraisals to handling total loss negotiations. She was involved with many industry professionals including adjusters, claims examiners, insurers and insureds. Lisa had 5 years behind her when she made the transition to the Insurance Company side of the industry. Markel Insurance Company of Canada (Northbridge Insurance) is one of Canada’s largest transportation insurers. While there, Lisa developed an extensive network of industry related contacts that are still a very important part of her business life today. Her duties included underwriting, claims and information technology which allowed her to obtain knowledge of just about every aspect of the transportation industry. In 1997 Lisa decided it was time to attack the industry from yet another angle and became an insurance broker. Lisa was hired by a large Ontario brokerage and was put in charge of creating a new Transportation Department. During the next two years, she was able to connect more directly with the transportation companies and continued to develop and maintain her industry contacts. Since then she has worked as an insurance broker solely in the trucking and transportation segment. Currently in her nineteenth year as a Broker, with H L Staebler Insurance Brokers, she is as passionate today as she was the first day she started. Lisa belongs to several trucking industry associations and is active in all of them, staying current on industry trends, etc. She specializes in safety & compliance areas such as mock audits, company structuring and analysis and is very instrumental in bringing the industry to her clients.

Driver Shortage – “Hot button”- “Buzzwords”- “Reality”- All of the above. In recent weeks I have spent a large amount of time discussing recruiting, retention, training, and everything ‘driver’. Although I am an insurance broker, and my job description involves placing owner operators and fleets with compatible insurers, I know that there is a lot more to being a good broker than that. I know that drivers are the lifeblood of the industry and I know that we have to find better ways to attract them, train them, and hold onto them. I think we also need to find a way to insure them once they graduate a reputable school that doesn’t mean just driving for a fleet. The apprenticeship program certainly advanced us in this category, but there is still a lot more work to be done – Especially for “less than fleet” companies.

To this end, I was fortunate to be part of a recent major recruiting event this past weekend. I know, you hear job fair and think “kicking tires” and “waste of time”. I did not get that impression or feel like that at all. The carriers that participated (nineteen in total) were there bright and early setting up and cheerfully chatting with one another and there was real sense of cooperation – Competitors cooperating. There was a sense of anticipation and hopefulness and the event was a success. The drivers who came out were a mix of new entrants into the industry as well as owner operators and some company fellas. At one point, looking around the room, there was a conversation going on at every table. People were engaged and invested. It was a room full of people who wanted to be there on a bright and beautiful Saturday morning. That says a lot, especially with the so few summery days we’ve had. I was invigorated about my industry and walked away hopeful that events such as this one and others will further us to our goal of filling up the driver pool with good, safe, qualified drivers. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and I will check back with you in August. Stay well and stay safe.
