Lisa Arseneau – Vice President - Lisa began her career in the transportation industry in 1986, joining Central Ontario Appraisers Inc. Her responsibilities included the day to day operation from scheduling appraisals to handling total loss negotiations. She was involved with many industry professionals including adjusters, claims examiners, insurers and insureds. Lisa had 5 years behind her when she made the transition to the Insurance Company side of the industry. Markel Insurance Company of Canada (Northbridge Insurance) is one of Canada’s largest transportation insurers. While there, Lisa developed an extensive network of industry related contacts that are still a very important part of her business life today. Her duties included underwriting, claims and information technology which allowed her to obtain knowledge of just about every aspect of the transportation industry. In 1997 Lisa decided it was time to attack the industry from yet another angle and became an insurance broker. Lisa was hired by a large Ontario brokerage and was put in charge of creating a new Transportation Department. During the next two years, she was able to connect more directly with the transportation companies and continued to develop and maintain her industry contacts. Since then she has worked as an insurance broker solely in the trucking and transportation segment. Currently in her nineteenth year as a Broker, with H L Staebler Insurance Brokers, she is as passionate today as she was the first day she started. Lisa belongs to several trucking industry associations and is active in all of them, staying current on industry trends, etc. She specializes in safety & compliance areas such as mock audits, company structuring and analysis and is very instrumental in bringing the industry to her clients.

As I sit here, writing this, I’m reflective on so many things already this year. It’s the first week of April and already we’ve had a time change, a season change, although after this past weekend’s snow, I’m not sure! We’ve experienced horrors from around the globe from terrorist groups and so many lives have been lost. One thing that stands out to me through all of this is perspective. Some events put things into perspective, where there was no real meaning before. Some events heighten your perspective, make it clearer, more concise. In the past several weeks the trucking industry has been doing both for me. I have attended great information seminars and met some very passionate advocates. I wrote in my last article about the MELT (Mandatory Entry Level Training) and mentoring. It gave me great perspective and I have been able to see it in my industry. It’s great to see, every couple of days, a mention in an industry publication or even better, mainstream newspapers.

I used to think voluntary memberships in transportation clubs gave very little in the way of return on dues. I don’t think that way at all anymore. The TTSAO has been very instrumental in the MELT initiative as well as hosting monthly think tank meetings, and, their past round table was invaluable. I decided to become a TTSAO member and although I could not attend the last think tank, I just received the minutes, and boy oh boy did they cover a lot of issues and had some terrific dialogue. I have not doubt that this organization is going to advance our struggles in many way!
Other organizations are also doing their part and I am looking forward to the upcoming Toronto Transportation Events such as their annual Spring Golf Tourny where we get to reconnect with our industry colleagues. I am also looking forward to their Women In Transportation Lunch and Learn in June. I attended last year, and the energy in the room was amazing and we are still talking about the topics discussed and the speakers that presented! Also in June is the PMTC conference and I can’t wait to attend…this will be my first one. Imagine, after 30 years in an industry, I still get to have firsts! Now, there’s a different perspective!
I am looking forward to great things in 2015 and count myself lucky to be part of such a great industry that does so much for itself and its members. Get out and get your perspective honed, changed or renewed, it feels great!
