Lisa Arseneau – Vice President - Lisa began her career in the transportation industry in 1986, joining Central Ontario Appraisers Inc. Her responsibilities included the day to day operation from scheduling appraisals to handling total loss negotiations. She was involved with many industry professionals including adjusters, claims examiners, insurers and insureds. Lisa had 5 years behind her when she made the transition to the Insurance Company side of the industry. Markel Insurance Company of Canada (Northbridge Insurance) is one of Canada’s largest transportation insurers. While there, Lisa developed an extensive network of industry related contacts that are still a very important part of her business life today. Her duties included underwriting, claims and information technology which allowed her to obtain knowledge of just about every aspect of the transportation industry. In 1997 Lisa decided it was time to attack the industry from yet another angle and became an insurance broker. Lisa was hired by a large Ontario brokerage and was put in charge of creating a new Transportation Department. During the next two years, she was able to connect more directly with the transportation companies and continued to develop and maintain her industry contacts. Since then she has worked as an insurance broker solely in the trucking and transportation segment. Currently in her nineteenth year as a Broker, with H L Staebler Insurance Brokers, she is as passionate today as she was the first day she started. Lisa belongs to several trucking industry associations and is active in all of them, staying current on industry trends, etc. She specializes in safety & compliance areas such as mock audits, company structuring and analysis and is very instrumental in bringing the industry to her clients.

Here it is, the close of another year. And what a year it has been. If you are anything like me, you have met new and amazing people. You have learned something new. You have done something different. Isn’t that

what we should all want?  I’m an avid “bootcamper”. I’ve met some really great and inspirational people. We have a cancer survivor in our group who recently participated in and won a Six Week Body Transformation Challenge. She is a testament to living life at its fullest and inspires me everyday.
I’ve learned that we all have personal struggles and can find strength in each other to overcome these struggles and turn them into challenges. Upon reflection of this year, my scorecard is reading more W’s than L’s and that’s a good thing! As for something different, I’ve done a few things differently. Instead of judging, I listen and try to understand. Instead of overreacting, I calmly think things through and reply. Instead of waiting for things to happen, I make them happen. I had a terrible habit of over-talking when in a conversation. I know listen attentively and respond, instead of forming my next thought or cutting in with it.
At the risk of sounding like a self help book, I wanted to share these thoughts with you. All of the above can be attributed to both our personal and business lives. I think anyone who is passionate about what they do for a living would agree that it blankets both. I find when we consciously make changes in our behaviour, we will see and that our peers and people in our lives recognize them and interact with us differently. If we make positive changes, that interaction is positive. Same goes for the negative. I choose the positive, as negative doesn’t suit me.
As I look toward 2016, I see great things happening in our industry. MELT(Mandatory Entry Level Training) is a big one on my radar. I have and continue to be a huge advocate for this and all of the safety initiatives our industry has and will be implementing. Stronger recruiting practices and the MEE(Making Eligibility Easy) platform is going to be instrumental in qualifying the right fit driver for our trucking companies and hopefully our insurers. Keep an eye on that one folks, it’s a game changer!
I also want to wish all of you a super ’16 and look forward to our next e-convo!
